Why does synthroid (thyroxine) have to be taken on an empty stomach? what will happen if it isn't taken on an empty stomach?

May not be absorbed: Thyroid hormone is best taken on an empty stomach and waiting at least 40-60 min before eating. This is to allow it to be absorbed into the body consistently. People who don't do this tend to have fluctuating thyroid levels so that their dosage is constantly changing.

One hour: Generally one hour, but it's not really necessary if you take the pills consistently under the same circumstances each day and you lab tests show normal levels. Take only brand name replacement and do not take within 2 hours (before or after) iron, calcium or vitamins.
