Peri-menopause: Most women gain 10-20 lbs when going through menopause. There is a natural slowing of the metabolism that cannot be reversed despite taking hormones. Even though you may still be having your period, at age 52 you are likely peri-menopausal. The best way to keep from gaining weight is to increase your exercise. This naturally increases your metabolism and burns calories.

Metabolism/activity: As we age, our metabolic rate slows, and we tend to be less active - leading to increasing weight. We all remember what we used to be able to eat when we were 20 years old, but none of us can do that safely after we age.
