Cues, counters: The keys to countering a panic attack before it develops are: developing an awareness if what your cues or triggers are, engaging panic countering behaviors (e.g., progressive relaxation, challenging automatic thoughts, distraction), & tracking the success of your counters. Medications can be a big support as well. A licensed cognitive-behavioral therapist can help you develop strong skills!

Stay active: Exercise is a great way to relieve stress. Your body releases endorphins during exercise, which can help you feel calm. If you exercise 30 - 60 minutes a day, your stress levels can improve. When stressed, take 5 slow, deep breaths with your eyes closed, then roll your shoulders forward 5 times, then back 5 times. This will slow your heart rate and release tension in your neck and shoulders.

Try the opposite!: If u feel panic attack coming on or if u're in situation that might bring one on, try this: let it come! actually let it happen! so if u feel one coming on tell urself "i can handle it -even though it won't feel good!" and before one comes or while it's happening 1) do slow "belly breathing"; & 2) alternate between squeezing & relaxing different muscle groups. U'll learn u have control over them!

Breathing : We deal with a lot of anxious people! Try taking a deep breath and holding it for four seconds. When you exhale try do it over four or five seconds. When you have reached the point where you can't exhale anymore hold it for another four seconds and continue doing this. This slow breathing really helps calm you down. Deep belly breaths, not shallow, breathing is key! best of luck!
