You may be right: Asthma that does not respond to treatment can be caused by several mechanisms; incorrect diagnosis; insufficient treatment or non-compliaance with medication; incorrect inhalation of inhalers; continuous exposure to allergens; smoking; gerd; certain medications - to name a few. Vocal cord dysfunction is not exclusive of asthma - both may co-exist.

Yes: Vocal cord dysfunction is frequently misdiagnosed as asthma. People with vocal cord dysfunction frequently have trouble on inspiration, which is taking a deep breath in. In addition, albuterol inhalers don't help vocal cord dysfunction but do improve asthma symptoms in most cases. If you think that you have vocal cord dysfunction, see an ent.
