Cold esophagus: Sometimes younger children have a hard time characterizing pain specifically. He may have had the equivalent of his brain freeze in his esophagus or stomach, a sudden pain from the coldness and was not able to best express where he was feeling the pain. Other than that, if the pain then got immediately better, sounds benign but I have got nothing else for you....

Referred vagal nerve: The vagus nerve runs by the esophagus and can be irritated by cold. This can be perceived as back pain. This very similar to the phenomenon of 'brain freeze' when one consumes cold foods/liquids.
