Yes: While most people with spondylitis carry the genetic marker called hla b-27, it is not present in 10-20% of spondylitis patients. In that situation, the diagnosis is made by finding typical x-ray, ct or MRI changes in the sacro-iliac joints. Likewise, only 20% of people who carry the b-27 gene ever develop spondylitis or a related condition.
