What would cause my 4yr old to have abdominal cramping, followed by 5-6 soft stools a day with bright red blood. no other symptoms.

A few possibilities: It could be a viral gastroenteritis (stomach bug) with a rectal fissure which will resolve with clear liquids, a bland diet, rectal lubrication and time. It could also be more serious, like a parasite, inflammatory bowel disease or a foreign body. If it continues for another day or worsens, please have your child evaluated by a pediatrician.
