The past 3 years the ball of my left foot and my big toe hurt (can't bend it to wear closed shoes)?

Hallux rigidus: Very possibly, you have what is termed "hallux rigidus" or a rigidly fixed great toe joint. This is an "wear and tear" type of arthritic condition localized to this specific joint. The inability to bend the great toe will limit your ability to propulse, or push-off, during each step, causing you to often transfer your weight to another part of the foot, in your case, maybe the ball of the foot.

See a podiatrist: It sounds like you have bone spurs or arthritis of your big toe. Your other toes may have developed metatarsalgis in response to the loss of motion of your big toe.

Arthritis or bunion: It sounds like you are having localized arthritis to your first mtpj (big toe) joint, possibly an arthritic bunion. There are various treatment options, depending on actual motion and level of pain, from orthotics to surgery. Your best bet is to be evaluated - x-rays and a good biomechanical should get you the right diagnosis.
