No: Currently, there are no known medical tests to diagnose autism, especially prenatally. It is diagnosed clinically by assessing behavior, communication and social skills typically at age 12m or older. While genetics are implicated, very few specific genes have been found in a majority of kids with autism.

Cause of Autism?: If the family members, especially your niece, have a diagnosis of one of the > 30 known genetic syndromes with autism as part of their neurodevelopmental profile, or comparative genomic hybridization &/or dna probe for fragile x show genetic abnormalities, ask your OB to refer you to a prenatal genetic counselor to determine if the pattern of inheritance increases your risk.
