Usually it is a cyst and most often it requires a small surgical excision and removal. If it is a benign condition then it is easily treatable. Good luck, hope it helps!

It’s likely a cyst because they’re the most frequent and, it may be growing because it got traumatized however, it began to grow after many years without a diagnosis.It is imperative to get it checked by the Dermatologist and biopsied as there are several other conditions that could harbor malignancies or become malignant on the scalp (N.sebaceous of J, Bcc,melanoma, SCC, a simple keratosis etc)
