Many causes: There are many possible causes of muscle spasms. Among the most common is magnesium deficiency; taking magnesium as taurate, glycinate or citrate may help. Stress (which can cause magnesium deficiency) is a cause. Potassium or calcium deficiency, structural imbalances, toxic chemicals & medication side effects can also be causes. Stretching, relaxation techniques & massage may be help. See comment.

Response to injury: Muscles spasm in response to injury. Injury to the muscles themselves or as a protective mechanism to stabilize other nearby bony or soft tissue structures. Realize that cramping and spasm are not exactly the same process, and causes can be different.
