Well tolerated: Usually, a small umbilical hernia may be repaired with mesh through a small incision under the umbilicus as an outpatient procedure. You will be sore for a couple of days, but can resume normal activities within the week after surgery. Larger hernias can be repaired via a laparoscopic approach and may require overnight hospitalization for pain control.

Hernia: There will be a small incision below your belly button. Most people go home the same day. I ask people not to lift heavy things for a few weeks. It is sore for the first few days.

Well tolerated: Most small umbilical hernias are repaired with a single, small, curved, horizontal incision over the hernia site at the belly button. If the hernia is small, you'll probably go home the same day. You can eat normal foods and go up stairs right away. Depending on the size of the hernia and type of repair, the surgeon may recommend avoiding strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for 4-6 weeks.
