Laparoscopic: I am guessing that you are describing laparoscopic surgery that uses 2 or 3 small ports with a camera to look inside & repair the hernia with mesh. Done under full general anesthesia. Usually outpatient surgery & go home same day as the surgery. Get post-operative instructions from your surgeon as what to do after surgery. Usually mild discomfort.

Future of surgery: Keyhole surgery involves a laporascopic approach. The surgeon will use carbon dioxide to inflate your belly like the superdome. Then from the inside they will be able to find the defect and repair it with a plug. This can have less scar, less pain, and can be repeated if need be. You may be able to return to work sooner.
