Both can be severe: For a medication allergy, a true ige mediated one can be as severe as one not mediated by ige. Anaphylaxis vs. Anaphylactoid. Same severe symptoms, just not ige mediated. These non-ige reactions can be to: blood products, ace inhibitors for high blood pressure, aspirin, nsaids, narcotics, anti-convulsants, and others. The severity is difficult to predict---treatment is same: avoidance!
