Nobody Knows: Gout happens when the level of uric acid in the blood is so high that excess uric acid deposits in the joints, where it is very irritating. The old tale was that all gout is diet-related, but that now seems true only in a minority of people. Persons with kidney damage cannot clear uric acid correctly, but other than that most patients never find a reason.

Uric acid: We know the mechanism, we just do not know exactly why. In the 18th and 19th centuries, it was a gentleman's disease, those that did no work and had rich fatty diets and a lot of alcohol. This is where the story persists. In the end it is uric acid crystals settling into your joints. Best of luck.

Gout: As was stated previously, gout is a buildup of uric acid in the body. This buildup forms crystals which deposit themselves in the coldest places in the body. The buildup occurs either by the body producing too much uric acid or not excreting enough of it in the urine. Most people are underexcreters. Drugs that lower uric acid levels in the body are helpful for long term control.
