Nutrition or illness: There are many different reasons for ridges...Past illness/stress, trauma, nutritional deficiencies. Have a dermatologist look at your nail beds and a diagnosis can usually be made.

Ridges: Vertical nail ridges are often caused by aging. Other causes include anemia, splinter hemorrhages, or conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, trachyonchia or peripheral vascular disease. Horizontal nail ridges (or Beau’s lines)run across the nail & might be signs of conditions like diabetes, thyroid disease, kidney disease.
