Immune function: As you know, melatonin is a hormone secreted by the brain -- & is most widely known for its effects on the sleep-wake cycle. An intricate physiologic balance regulates production and release of this hormone. It may also enhance immune system responses. It's possible that melatonin could worsen existing autoimmune conditions -- especially in the large doses available in health food stores.
