If: If you have an autoimmune disease as the cause of the pericardial effusion, Prednisone is far more effective than nsaids. Prednisone is not without side effects such as diabetes and osteoporosis. However, not treating a large pericardial effusion has a much higher risk of complications compared to taking either of these medicines. See your doctor for further discussion.

Prednisone: While initially may be effective can also lead to recurrence and long courses of therapy. Ideally steroids should be a last resort. Colchicine has also become promising.
