Can!: It is not uncommon for the ankle to be involved. Certainly less common than the mtp, and more common than the knee. Upper extremeity joints are all less common than the lower extremity, because of their dependency. Fluid from your vascualr system seeps out more in the lower extremity. At night, water moves back into your blood stream than uric acid, which crystalizes and gout attack occurs.
