Yes - helpfull.: A pet scan uses an injection of radioactive sugar. It will not work if a patients blood sugar above 200. It will be taken up in most malignancies and persists, whereas normal tissue gets rid of it and remains negative on the scan. If your mass in tghe chest is positive, you may need a biopsy.

PET is effective.: Pet scans can detect presumed cancer in lymph node structures that are normal in size. They are helpful in planning treatment for lung tumors. The pulmonary function tests are also part of determining what you might be able to tolerate surgically. Pet sees the utilization of sugar, and tumors tend to use more sugar than normal structures. It's not specific for cancer though.
