Insomnia: Insomnia means you are unable to sleep. A person might be unable to fall asleep (you?); unable to stay asleep; or, have early morning awakening & not be able to get back to sleep. Insomnia can be associated with several medical conditions, which a doctor will screen for if you make an appointment. Sometimes additional diagnostics are needed, or consultations with specialists.

Many causes: Insomnia may be the inability to initiate or maintain sleep; you may also wake up too early and not be able to get back to sleep. The doctor will investigate possible causes of which type of insomnia you have. You may be prescribed medication like Lunesta (eszopiclone) or ambien. If you are depressed or anxious, then you may need a medication like Lexapro or zoloft to fix your sleep problem.
