Varies: It depends on the person, both are touted as sleep aids. There are a few combination agents that include valerian, melatonin and kava + herbal tea -- to sort of throw the kitchen sink at getting you to sleep. This might be better choice to start, since if it fails, it moves you right to needing a prescription!

Insomnia: I recommend using excellent sleep hygiene as a first step. When Melatonin is used sublingually it can be very effective Both can help you fall asleep. An herbal mix was recommended by one provider- I would encourage you to avoid Kava Kava due to rare but potential significant liver problems.
