Depends: Allergy or anxiety are most common options. Others very rare. Should see an allergist for evaluation and testing to try to identify and resolve them.

Chronic hives: Hives (urticaria) that have been present for over 2 months typically fall into 3 categories. 1. Chronic autoimmune-body is reacting against itself; blood test available 2. Chronic idiopathic-we don't know why 3. Physical urticaria; many triggers such as heat, cold, dermagraphism. Anxiety can make hives worse, but don't assume it is just nerves. Allergies are a more frequent cause of acute hives.
