Hello. : Hello. Although hives is not one of the typical symptoms of alcohol withdrawal, anxiety certainly is. Hives can be caused by anxiety. If you are alcoholic, i don't recommend detoxifying yourself without medical supervision. You can become quite ill while detoxifying. Most people detoxify in an inpatient setting but some doctors are will to do outpatient detoxification protocols. Your body is going through tremendous changes right now. Recommend that you be medically evaluated for your hives and for withdrawal symptoms.

No: Have never seen anyone with hives as a result of stopping drinking. Hives are usually an allergic response to something, but can be caused by other things - exposure to cold, or even stress (which may be the case after stopping drinking). Try a low dose of Benadryl (diphenhydramine) (25 mg) but if it persists you should see your doctor to examine them and give advice. Steroid creams may help, but not oral steroid.
