What kind of damage to the brain can atypical antipsychotics do? permanent?

Some risks: Classical antipsychotics meds did cause parkinsonian side effects, and on occasion permanent tardive dyskinesia. The newer drugs are far safer, but these issues still occur on occasion. Please discuss with your psychiatrist and get assured regarding approach.

Less TD: The major persistent side effet of the older antipsychotics is "tardive" (late-onset) "dyskinesia" (abnormal motion"). The atypicals cause this problem at 1/10 the frequency. Risk factors remain length of time on the medication, older age, post-menopause, alcoholism and severity of parkinsonisn side effects upon initial use. Mild td of short duration is reversible.
