A member asked:

Does muscle tenseness from antipsychotics go away after they are stopped? do all other side effects go away or is the brain rewired retaining effects

Muscle tenseness : Goes away except in those fortunately rare cases of tardive dystonia that can leave the poor patient twisted like a pretzel. I've only seen 1 case in 30 years and hope never to encounter it again. Best wishes.

Usually goes away: Tenseness from antipsychotic medications usually does go away when the antipsychotic is stopped; but if the antipsychotic is still needed, then an additional medication like benztropine can be helpful for the side effect. Switching to a different antipsychotic like Abilify (aripiprazole) might also help since it is less likely to cause tenseness and other side effects than other antipsychotic medications.
