A member asked:

Can stopping an antipsychotic be possibly life threatening? does the brain have a save or back up plan?

Not In My Experience: Sudden cessation of an antipsychotic medication may cause discontinuation symptoms such as general malaise, flu-like symptoms, insomnia, or increased anxiety. The important question here is why one would stop taking their antipsychotic medication. Whenever changes in medications are made, work closely with the prescribing physician. One could risk the return of treated symptoms.

D/C antipsychotic ?: I agree with dr. Woods about potential withdrawal symptoms on stopping certain antipsychotic drugs. This would be uncomfortable, but not generally lethal. However, if the antipsychotic is holding at bay psychotic symptoms like command hallucinations telling you to kill yourself -- then stopping that medicine could be life-threatening. Please work with your psychiatrist on any med changes.
