Sleep Hygine: Go to bed and get up at the same time each day, avoid tv, computers, anything that will "wake you up" for about 45 min prior to the time you want to fall asleep, same goes for exercise. Try not to eat heavy meals or drink alcohol 4 hours prior to sleep, make your sleep environment conducive to sleep. Do not work in bed. Do not "nap" during the day. Check with your dr. If valerian tea is ok for you.

Natural sleep: Sleep is a natural process. You fall asleep if you're relaxed at the right point in your circadian rhythm. If you're not relaxed or it's not the right time, it doesn't happen. If you have to take something to fall asleep, it's unnatural, whether it's a pill or an herb.

AGREE BUT WILL ADD: Often the cause is, people doing unnatural things like using stimulants from caffeine to nicotine, sodas, shift changes. People having other organic causes like pain, anxiety etc, causing insomnia may need to have that problem addressed. Less harmful otc eg. Melatonin, Diphenhydramine (benadryl) & the teas can be tried. If you are obese, sleep apnoea etc can be contributing cause.
