Push fluids: When his temp starts climbing put him in a warm tub for one half hour to bring the temperature down. Also push fluids.

Not particularly: Kids that age handle fever better than adults. Chilled fluids or a cold compress on his forehead may provide comfort. As long as you keep him hydrated he should do okay & the fever should respond to the abx within another day. Persistence of high fever beyond that point would likely indicate a coexisting problem.
