A member asked:

My 18 month old son jammed a q-tip in his ear. he cried for a few minutes and i just noticed a little blood. is this an er visit?

Yes: If you noticed blood, most probably he injured his external canal but there is a risk that he may have injured his tympanic membrane. Better for him to be checked out. Either er or peds office if the child does not seem to be in pain.

I wouldn't: I seldom recommend you go to the area where car crashes/heart attacks/gunshot wounds & weird infectious diseases congregate. This is a routine office visit to identify the source of the blood. It can and should wait until you can see someone that evaluates kids on a regular basis.
