Will not help: These are antibiotic drops and are intended to treat an ear canal infection. The infection your son has is behind the ear drum or in the middle ear. Topical numbing drops may help along with Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Ibuprofen. Also keeping his head elevated. Many children will benefit from an antibiotic. All the best.

Needs to be seen: Your son needs to be checked by his pediatrician for a possible an ear infection and he might need prescribed antibiotics by mouth in addition to the local treatment. Good luck!

It would be best: To have a doctor look in the ear. Covering up pain, and potentially introducing liquid into a eardrum that is at risk of rupture may worsen things. If it's possible to have someone look in the ear to look for foreign bodies, insects, perforation of the eardrum or fluid behind the eardrum with the tool doctors use (an otoscope) is the best way to go. Check for fever, and note any other symptoms.
