Detect complications: Given the location of pilonidal cysts, an MRI can be warranted if there is suspicion that it is deeper because of the proximity to the spinal cord.

Spinal Cord Eval: It is not routine to get an MRI for pilonidal disease. But if your doctor is concerned of spinal cord involvement for some reason, then that can indicate an mri. Otherwise, examination is usually enough to diagnose pilonidal disease.
