Two parts: There are two parts to the exam. The arthrogram, which is done using x-rays and small needles to put in the "dye" (15-20 min), and the MRI part (~30 min). Also, you'll probably be waiting a bit in between.

Depends: In my practice, we do an MRI study before and after the arthrogram. The pre arthrogram MRI takes 20 minutes, and the post arthrogram takes 30 minutes, as long as there are no artifacts or motion which would result in repeated images. The arthrogram takes about 5 minutes, with the injection no more than 10 seconds with an experienced Doctor. Google: Dr. Nefcy Arthrogram Advice for more details.
