What is the safest way to switch from concerta to adderall (dextroamphetamine and racemic amphetamine)?

Just switch: A nice aspect of stimulants is that they are out of your body by the beginning of the next day. We know roughly the dose equivalents among stimulants (25-30 mg of Adderall (dextroamphetamine and racemic amphetamine) is about equal to 54 mg of concerta); but, individual reactions vary. In switching, i usually start at a slightly lower dose that the conversion would suggest, then raise it if needed.

Concerta: As instructed by your doctor, stop one & start the other.

What is the main difference between Adderall (dextroamphetamine and racemic amphetamine) and concerta?

Different drugs: Both are stimulants, but Adderall (dextroamphetamine and racemic amphetamine) is amphetamine and Concerta is methylphenidate. Both have been shown to work about equally well for treating adhd with quite similar side effects; however, some people do much better on one class than the other, and the only way to know if that is true for you is to give it a try. Adderall (dextroamphetamine and racemic amphetamine) xr and Concerta last about the same amount of time, 10-12 hours.

Could you prefer Adderall (dextroamphetamine and racemic amphetamine) or concerta?

Different strokes: 2 very different compounds. Not a matter of preference, but of efficacy and tolerability. Many patients do well on methylphenidate and do not do well on amphetamines. These individuals would do well with Concerta as it is a long-acting mph. For those who do not respond to mph, amphetamines or mixed amphetamine salts are indicated.

Different versions: Both Adderall (dextroamphetamine and racemic amphetamine) (amphetamine salts) and Concerta (a long acting form of Ritalin) are both stimulants whose strength depends on the dosage prescribed. There are also many less known stimulating meds which you can discuss with your doc. This is especially important given your, thyroid issues.

Depends...: Ppl respond differently to meds so it depends which one helps you focus when you need to. Some adults prefer having a little more control over dosing so shorter-acting Adderall (dextroamphetamine and racemic amphetamine) is preferred. Others like once-a-day dosing to carry through the workday. Some ppl metabolize extended-release meds faster ; find they don't last the 12 hours promised. You'll have to try ; see which works better for you.
