MRI can show things: That the xray cannot. I am assuming from yuor question a doctor is telling you that you might need an mri. Yes i think that is appropriate. In fact I have seen MRI show many things not seen on the initial mri. Fractures, pneumothorax, disc herniations. Just remember a single neg xray means very little. Xrays can miss a lot.
