Diagnosis: Your provider may be looking for a subtle fracture that might not be visible on regular x-rays. There are other conditions such as osteonecrosis (death of part of the bone in the ball portion of the joint), infection, tumors, impingement, bursitis that may be found on mri.

X-ray not perfect: As with all tests in medicine, the xray may not detect every kind of abnormality. You may have a subtle stress fracture which would only be visible by mri. Also, MRI looks at the labrum (cushion in the hip joint) which the xray cannot see. You may also have a tendon or ligament abnormality which the xray cannot detect.
