Rare PartialRecovery: A locked-in patient has damage to the pons, at the lower part of the brain, causing paralysis of muscles except eye muscles. Only in rare cases is there some partial recovery, and these rare cases should show improvement in the first weeks or months. Otherwise, the brain damage is permanent. Since cognitive function is fine, speech therapists can help find out from the patient what he wants to do.

No cure: There is no "cure" for any stroke. Locked-in syndrome is a rare condition to begin with. Full recovery never occurs. Some recovery may be possible, but it is even rarer, & any significant FUNCTIONAL improvement is rarer still. So the prognosis is always grim at best, dismal at worst. Most importantly, discard the notion of "cure."
