Does zinc help w/ the recovery of adult pneumonia patients?

Yes . . . and No.: Zinc is an important co-factor in our immune system's functioning. One study has shown that maintaining normal zinc levels led to decreased duration of pneumonia, and decreased duration of antibiotics needed to treat the pneumonia. This does not mean that zinc supplementation will necessarily help with pneumonia recovery; but it does suggest that maintaining normal zinc levels in the body will.

Unknown: There is some evidence in studies done mostly in third world countries in children that zinc supplementation can shorten the course of pneumonia, there are also studies that show less effect. There does not seem to be much data in adults one way or the other, so i would say this is an area where there is not firm proof one way or the other.
