How do patient expectations affect back pain recovery?

4 doctors weighed in across 2 answers

Quite important: As with all medical problems, patient expectations can positively or negatively affect clinical outcomes. Back pain, by definition, has so may causes and has so many treatments it is essential the patient knows the realistic limits of treatment. Unfortunately , some back issues do not improve even in the best of md hands and some may only improve slightly. A 100% cure is rare.

See below: Our emotions and expectations have a lot to do with the our bodies healing response.Negative emotions and expectations make it harder to recover from illnesss and injury and the reverse is also true. This is not new age mumbo jumbo. There have been many well designed research studies that back this up. Our minds are inseparable from our bodies.
