You could have swollen gums[periodontal disease] that causes an abscess. A tooth infection would show up on an x-ray. If your gums are red and bleed and pus comes out than see a gum specialist[PERIODONTIST] You need to pursue an oral hygiene program now.

Good question! I've performed many abscess drainage's in practice. Many were located deep within the body and image guidance was required. An abscess near the surface, seem's like it should be "easy enough". Though I should know better, a couple times I did try it myself. Both without success! There's often more "uncertainty" than we anticipate. I'd try discussing with another dentist first.

Dr Trager is correct. You may indeed have gum disease rather than an infected tooth. Do not try to treat it yourself. Draining the lesion yourself only increases the risk of spreading the infection. You need to see a bone/gum specialist, a Periodontist.
