Normal: The thyroid produces active areas and it is common to have nodules under 1 cm. Unless they grow over a cm or you have problems breathing or swallowing related to the thyroid, relax.

Common: Thyroid nodules are quite common particularly in women. Unless you nodule is greater than 1 cm or associated with concerning ultrasound findings such as calcifications or abnormal bloodflow, it does not need to be biopsied.

Being human!: Opinions vary, but... Especially for women, thyroid nodules are very common. These are sometimes familial or inherited. There is little to be worried about if you have one (or more), especially if they are small, but biopsy of nodules 8 or 10mm or larger is recommended. It is reasonable to follow with ultrasound in 6-12 months (sooner if any obvious enlargement). Don't lose too much sleep over it!
