A member asked:

Does a dental crown need to be replaced when an endodontist removes or treats the tooth root's abscess? or, is the work done via the gum tissue only?

It depends: With conventional root canal therapy, the endodontist will go through the crown, if present, for access. It's usually the best treatment to remake the crown afterwards, but not always essential. If you have an apicoectomy only, which is uncommon (canals calcified), there will be no damage to the crown and therefore it won't be necessary to redo the crown.

No: Unless there is something wrong with the crowns.

No: The endodontist can treat the tooth through the crown and then once completed the hole in the crown can be repaired.

No: Usually a root canal can be done through the crown and no new crown is needed. Occasionally the crown may crack requiring a new crown but this is not typical.

It depends: Once a root canal is done thru a crown it depends on how long the crown has been there and if there are any decay if decay is there , then yes, crown need to be repalced.

Procedure: If you are having an apioectomy or retreat where the endodontist access the lesion from the 'side', your crown will not be altered in any way. If your root canal is done through the middle of the crown, you will need a core build up after, and that is generally not as ideal as getting a new crown with no filled 'access hole' if you will. You don't have to get a new crown, unless old one is faulty.
