Slightly early: The average is age 9 - 12 for loss of the first molar, but remember that is average. Remember, each child is an individual. If you are still concerned, see you general dentist or pediatric dentist.

Not necessarily: Age 8 is a little early to be losing the primary molars if a permanent bicuspid is erupting. The average age is around 10, but some patients are a year or two late in losing their permanent molars and it then takes a patient who is a year or two early to maintain the average age of 10. Not really a problem, but eight year-olds need to see a dentist regularly.
