Not necessarily: The dental implant is the best treatment available to replace a missing tooth. Often patients will have dental implant surgery and there is usually minimal discomfort that same day or maybe the next day if any. Often patients may take 1-2 pain pills. Of course, it really depends on the skill level of the doctor placing the dental implant. Consult an oral surgeon or a dentist.

Dental Implant : Assuming the surrounding teeth are sound and do not need restorative work, an implant is the way to go. Done properly, there is minimal discomfort associated with implant dentistry.

Don't hurt: Implants don't hurt much at all. Most pt's control pain afterward with motrin. It's a superior choice to the bridge and usually only costs a little more. With the loss of a retained baby tooth, your case is probably very straight forward and predictable. The pain will be minimal, the bone will not feel pain only the soft tissue and periosteum or sheet of plastic wrap like tissue covering bone.

Implant best : Replacing a missing tooth is best replaced with a dental implant. A fixed bridge results in damaging healthy teeth on either side of missing tooth. Also the preparation of fixed bridge can also result with acute post op pain. An alternative replacement as a temporary measure is removable appliance to help maintain space until can have missing tooth replaced with a dental implant.

Bridges = Problems!: It may be hard to believe that a bridge or your replacement bridges to come have far more potential for painful issues than an implant. Most implants are "one and done." when i first started placing them, i was certain patients would have discomfort...They don't! however cutting down teeth for bridges often yield root canals and gum problems and when it loosens up in 8 years, more of the same!
