Joint stability: Range of motion studies and stability exam can help determine what stage your sprain is. All ankle sprains that have bruising and swelling should be evaluated for ligament tears and a fracture to avoid long term instability.

Clinical Examination: It is tough to say from just the bruising. If a fracture has been ruled out with xrays, the grade of sprain can be determined often by a good examination. If there is significant instability, it is often a grade iii sprain.

Have it evaluated.: If ignored, one may have an increased risk of re-injury leading to a more severe injury. Have it evaluated. You would need to have it physically evaluated and you may need an MRI to know for sure.
