An evaluation first: A psychiatrist is a doctor who specializes in mental health. The 1st visit will be an evaluation, where he or she will ask you questions about your depression and other emotions, and allow you to talk about anything upsetting you. By the end of the session, the psychiatrist will usually be able to tell you what will help. This may include antidepressant medicine, which he or she can prescribe.

NOT UNUSUAL: I do not think that this is too unusual of a suggestion. A psychiatrist will be better versed with all the anti depressants and possible other diagnoses. Nothing to fear.
