Ask your doctor: Shirley, most primary care MDs (GPs) in the U.S. will prescribe an initial dose of an antidepressant, often an SSRI medication, to their patients on the recommendation of a mental health professional. I don't know what the regulations are in the Great Britain health system. Call your GPs office and ask them. If you need to see a psychiatrist, ask your psychologist to refer you to one. Good luck
