Yes: Most dentists agree that you should use a soft brush and make sure to get the bristles into the gum space surrounding the teeth, that is, angle down 45 degrees on lower teeth and up 45 degrees on upper teeth. Use gentle back and forth movements to dislodge/disrupt the bacteria that grow in these spaces. That's gum brushing. Make sure to scrub the teeth also. Dental floss gets in between teeth.

Brush Your Teeth: In a clockwise direction both on the front and back surfaces of the teeth so you won't miss any tooth. A lot of people brush their front teeth first and goes towards the back, the ones usually missed are the areas where gum disease exists. Yes, just like the other doctor said- floss! :).
