1st things 1st: The 1st treatment is not antibiotics. With onset of fever, you don't have to treat.. You can watch & wait. Fever helps raise the body to temperatures that bacteria & viruses don't tolerate. Comfort is the key. 1st line use acetamenophen or ibuprofen. 3 grams in 24 hours for acetamenophen and 2400 mg for ibuprofen. Can alternate 500 tylenol (acetaminophen) with 600 Ibuprofen every 4 hours. Prolonged? Md!

See below: To just get rid of a fever you can take tylenol (acetaminophen) or Ibuprofen . Sponge baths will also bring down a fever. These treatments will do nothing to treat the underlying cause of the fever.

Fever: There are many scientists who espouse the theory that fever is a beneficial mechanism the body has to fight infection naturally, and that there is no reason to suppress fever unless it reaches levels which are inordinately uncomfortable or effects other organ system functions (brain, cardiovascular, etc.).
