It can be constant: What you have described is quite typical for reflux pain. Treatments include medications such as proton pump inhibitors (eg omeprazole), h2 blockers (eg ranitidine), dietary modificatins (avoidance of coffee, red wine, citrus) and elevation of the head of the bed.
